Where is clean energy growing fastest?
Which states added the most clean energy capacity in April?
Last month, the U.S. built 3,980 MW of carbon-free electricity generating capacity. By comparison the country added just 1 MW of fossil fuel generating capacity.
In April, Texas built the most clean energy capacity of any state, adding 435 MW of solar, 528 MW of wind, and 243 MW of battery storage capacity.
Georgia brought the second most online because, well, Vogtle.
I wanted to put the 1,206 MW of clean energy capacity Texas built in April in context. So I checked how much California has built in the first 4 months of this year. The answer: 1,181 MW.
In other words, Texas built more clean capacity in one month than California built in the first 4 months of 2024.
The Lone Star State also led the nation in new solar capacity in April, bringing 435 MW of new capacity online. That's more than the next 3 states combined. It's also pretty close to the amount California brought online in the first 4 months of 2024 (486 MW).
April wasn't some fluke month for Texas either. 90% of all generating capacity built in Texas over the last 24 months was carbon-free. The state added a staggering 16.9 GW of clean energy capacity over that period.
